Parents are right to be suspicious of "educational" apps. Most are video feeds in disguise — autoplay, ads, streaks. Research on toddlers says the opposite: short, intentional sessions with a co-present adult, audio-led, with the child in control of pacing, produce real learning.
Checklist: screen time that teaches
- One action = one word. Tap a block, hear one clear sentence. No queue.
- No ads, no autoplay, no dark patterns. The child decides what to explore next.
- Audio is the point. The voice is slow, warm, normalised to cut through the room.
- Works on a TV. Big blocks, high contrast, readable from the couch.
- Preview without a trap. First blocks browsable before any paywall.
How to make 5 minutes count
- Pick one category per day — Fruits on Monday is enough.
- Say the word with the teacher, then let the child say it alone.
- Stop when they want to stop. Choice is the reward loop.
